According to research collected by the Department of Environmental Quality in Virginia, mercury levels in fish from the South River remain unchanged since 2002. High levels of mercury are attributed to a Dupont plant in Waynesboro some 50 years ago, that used the chemical as part of a manufacturing process.
Stocked fish from a year ago were also tested. There were mercury levels found in those fish but at levels below what is considered at risk for human consumption. But even with that, officials say that no changes have been made to consumption warnings.
Visit the Virginia Department of Health web site at this link for a complete listing of fish consumption advisories.
