Al Gore Served Endangered Fish Species At Daughter’s Wedding
Live Earth (corrected 7/19) must be a distant memory or perhaps it was nothing more than just another concert for Al Gore, former vice president and presidential hopeful, now turned “Father Earth”.
I read recently a quote from someone that said after Earth First, which touted that the world was in crisis because of global warming, that as soon as people like Al Gore began living as though the earth was in crisis, they would start thinking that the earth was in crisis. This of course referring, in part anyway, to Al Gore’s lifestyle of fast planes, big cars, mansion for homes and about everything else that consumes huge amounts of energy.
The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Al Gore served up Chilean sea bass at his daughter’s wedding. Now, whether Chilean sea bass is actually an endangered species or not remains to be debated considering it is the Humane Society International that is laying that claim.
The problem comes because the fish is in short supply but there is very little regulation in controlling the taking of the fish species, one that is in high demand globally.
The illegal capture and sale of the Patagonian toothfish has led to several arrests and fines. Illegal overfishing threatens the species in some areas, as it is slow-growing, reaching maturity between ten and twelve years of age. The longline fishery has also been criticised for drowning thousands of seabirds, including albatrosses.
It is my understanding that it is not illegal to buy and serve Chilean sea bass but being the world renowned “Father Earth” that he claims, one would think Mr. Gore would be right on top of this sort of thing and be an example by not serving it as his daughter’s wedding.
Another case of do as I say, not as I do.

Is this story supposed to be a joke or something? And just for the record, there is no debate whether the fish IS endangered. It is not, so please get your facts straight.

Just for the record, there is DEBATE as to whether the fish is endangered otherwise debate wouldn’t be taking place globally about the lack of regulation in harvesting Chilean sea bass.
Chilean sea bass, is not a fish found in the U.S. therefore it would not be anything listed on the federal Endangered Species Act list.
Chilean sea bass is over fished because of the large demand globally for the fish. If something isn’t done soon, the fish may end up in short supply.
I have no facts to get straight. I presented the story as it appeared in the Daily Telegraph. I think it only fair that when a person, Al Gore, puts himself in the lime light and claims that the world is coming to an end because global warming is the biggest threat to this planet, he falls under great scrutiny.
It is no secret that he doesn’t always practice what he preaches. Taking the stance he has puts him on a different level than the average Joe.
In answer to your question, yeah this story is supposed to be a joke. Did he serve up Chilean sea bass at his daughter’s wedding? Yes! Should he have done that? You tell me.

I wasn’t questioning whether there was debate as to whether it SHOULD be endangered, however there is no debate as to whether it IS CURRENTLY endangered. It is. There’s a difference and the wording in the article is vague at best.
And yes, Al Gore does practice what he preaches, despite what the right-wing smear machine might say otherwise.

Rather, the restaurant later confirmed, they had come from one of the world’s few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish, and caught and documented in compliance with Marine Stewardship Council regulations. The Gores’ spokesman, Kalee Kreider, admitted that the fish has been on the menu, but said: “The Gores absolutely agree with this humane society and the rest of the environmental community about illegally caught Chilean sea bass.”

Note: The concerts were called “Live Earth,” not “Earth First.” And I believe Gore’s title is “Ozone Boy,” not “Father Earth.” But anyway . . .
The fish was sustainably harvested:

Chilean Sea Bass fishing is regulated. Poaching is a problem. Eating sustainably harvested fish is Not. An. Issue.
I assume that everyone would grant that at a once-in-a-lifetime event such as a wedding, a person might indulge with the expense of this sustainably harvested fish even though it is obviously out of the reach of most of us every day?? Or isn’t Al Gore’s daughter allowed to celebrate her marriage??
Also, let us not lose sight of the fact that Gore is trying to reduce carbon emissions to avoid a global climate crisis, not save every freakin’ fish on the planet. See, he’s not some radical enviro-looney who wants to make you live in a hollow log and bring an end to life as we know it. He’s trying to save life as we know it.
Needless to say, if you scrutinize Al Gore and every move he makes and every bite he ingests you are going to find evidence of imperfection, which you can blow up into a big hissy fit and call – gasp – hypocrisy! It is not possible to be an environmental saint in a world filled with consumer goods, dirty power, food of questionable origins. Gore is a LOT more consistent than most people are.
These silly attacks on Gore personally are a distraction to avoid the scary reality of global warming, and they are getting really old. The next thing you know someone is going to break the big story of how Gore’s underwear isn’t made of organic cotton. Gasp!
