Al Gore Is Green? - Daily Bag Limit - Fish talk

    Al Gore Is Green?

Just when I thought we had something else to poke fun at Al Gore, inventor of the Internet (this is another fun poker for those who don’t know), now the Telegraph is reporting that the Chilean sea bass that the Gore’s served at their daughter’s wedding was caught legally.

Rather, the restaurant later confirmed, they had come from one of the world’s few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish, and caught and documented in compliance with Marine Stewardship Council regulations. The Gores’ spokesman, Kalee Kreider, admitted that the fish has been on the menu, but said: “The Gores absolutely agree with this humane society and the rest of the environmental community about illegally caught Chilean sea bass.

For the record, let me clarify a few things from my post yesterday about Al Gore. First, I erred when I called the concert that was held recently to raise awareness of the earth’s impending doom due to global warming. I called it Earth First. The concert was labeled Live Earth and I made a correction on that post and noted the time it was made.

Secondly, it was me and only me who opted to call Mr. Gore, “Father Earth”. Is it wrong for a writer to be original in thought and creativity or am I to be relegated to copying what everyone else says in the press?

Third, I never said the Gore’s broke the law. What I said very plainly was….

It is my understanding that it is not illegal to buy and serve Chilean sea bass….

There are legal ways to buy Chilean sea bass and it appears that the Gores did just that. My questions surrounded the debate about whether the fish is actually in danger of being over fished. With debate going on about attempting to get better regulation to insure the survivability of Chilean sea bass, I questioned whether it was wise for a man who, by his own decision, lives in a glass house because of his activism on global warming and saving the environment.

If Dick Cheney had served polar bear meat at a major family gathering, don’t you think he would have also been crucified by those waiting to pounce. And justifiably so. Although it isn’t illegal to buy polar bear meat, one would question that decision because of the ongoing debate about the truth behind whether the polar bear is endangered because of the label of global warming.

This and the original post I made isn’t to debate and discuss the validity of “global warming” but to question the decision to serve up a dish that can be perceived as controversial by many. Global warming will be debated for decades and much of that debate will be fueled by individual perceptions of what global warming is and what should be done about it.

When anyone takes a firm stand on any issue, they have to expect to be scorned, laughed at and ridiculed. I’m sure if you could ask Mr. Gore, he would tell you the same thing.

Well, a couple of things. First, if Dick Cheney served up polar bear meat at a function, he would almost certainly be in violation of the United States-Russia Polar Bear Conservation and Management Implementation Act (S. 2013)
which implements the Polar Bear Treaty,

But I know that’s not your main point. Your main point is that “those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

Sadly, while hypocrisy is always something to be concerned about, in today’s world of “gotcha” politics, manufacturing hypocrisy has become a full-time occupation for some, and a way to silence those who speak out on important issues. I’ll repeat what I said before: Al Gore is human and has never claimed to be perfect. He goes to great lengths to be as green as he can be while still living a mainstream life and being an effective and active advocate for the environment, most specifically on the issue of global warming. To hold him to a standard of perfection is a silly, childish waste of time.

The fish was sustainably harvested, and while serving it to 75 people sure would be expensive, since the market price reflects the cost of raising it sustainably, for a wedding of people with wealth, it is not outside the realm of the reasonable.

Why not pay more attention and spend more time learning about global warming and what we all can do together to bring these environmental effects under control before it is too late, rather than trying to find fault with Mr. Gore?
