What to do with those fall ducks. - Aroostook Flyers & Tyers - Skinny Moose Media

What to do with those fall ducks.

Now lets preface this with the fact that I am an avid hunter as well as tyer. So I collect alot of my materials myself. Not mention a fair amount of trading goes on up here in the woods. So my flies are more representative of this than the local fly shop. Mets necks are good and I use them. But I have a tendency to gather my own hackles from the poultry myself. Now I have written about this in the past so I will leave it alone. Not faulting those of you who prefer store bought.

Now go out and hunt hard!!! Mallard flank is a valuable addition to the tyers larder.

But don’t forget…. Partridge and pheasant rank high on the list as well. Then there’s rabbit, deer hair, bear hair, moose hair, and trappers can be traded with for beaver and muskrat as well.

See why I love life in Aroostook County Maine, my local fly shop is the great outdoors and the shelves are never empty. Not always in season, but never empty.

TIP: Contact your local taxidermist for a source for most tanned furs and feathers from nature. The trimmings from a mount can be widely variable. Expect to pay about $50.00 a garbage bag for the leftovers.
