Ok…..we got snow today!! Almost Icefishing time…..still about a month to go. Good start to the season.
KEEP WARM…….KEEP TYING………Join us in the ICE FLY TYING CONTEST!!!!!
MDIFW is conducting a brook trout Survey. Click on Survey and tell the state what you think about how they are managing your trout fishing. This survey is for 2009……..still time to get your voice heard. Resident and Non-resident versions available on their site.
Are you looking for access to the Experts? Live interviews…….facts in their own words. You need to go here: ASK ABOUT FLYFISHING
Listen to the best of the best explain all just for your ears. Interviews and information not available anywhere else. The best part ………………… IT’S FREE!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!!!! Well so far we have 5 confirmed tyers for our contest. Hopefully we can get 5 times that by the deadline. No matter, email me that you are in and you can start tying. I will post the flies after Christmas or as they come in. But be aware….. I will not post the tyer’s name. Once we reach the minimum, I will update the pics with names.
Seems silly I know…….but if this contest folds I would not want to embaress those willing to attempt it. The internet is a strange place and all that is written is forever. You cannot erase anything in the ether of an electronic pulse. So come all you eager tyers and lets have a game of it.
Now here’s an organization worth our support. This group helps breast cancer patients reconnect with life. What better way to connect…than through flyfishing. In the coming months I will be assisting the organization in holding a tye-athon. It will start out small and grow from there. To hosting a retreat at some point in the next year or so I hope. I encourage you to join a local chapter. At some point in January I will try to get you to donate some flies as well. So you are off the hook for now! (Sort Of…..)
The Tye:
Hook: Size #8 3x Carlisle
Thread: Orange Kevlar
Eyes: Bead Chain ( small silver)
Body: Yellow Chenille (Lg size)
Rib: Heavy Gold Wire
Tail: White Marabou
Pretty basic tye. Place eyes on shank with kevlar thread and tye in tail. Add Chenille and wire. Wrap the chenille up to the eyes and tye off. Counter wind the wire to the eyes and tye down. Form the head with the thread and cement windings.
Now for the sake of imagination I will allow all tyers to alter the coloration of the tye. But the Neon must stay neon and all elements of the tye must remain. Feel free to play with colors but keep it “Neon”!!! Add some sparkle or flash ……..change the tail. But the basic elements must remain.
First I will be posting my actual fly in the next 24 hours. But if you were watching the video closely you will see that all ice-flies are nymph-like bugs or minnowesque. The fly I will tye will be particularly suited for perch, as they are the #1 ice species catchable with these bits of sparkle and stuff.
As I stated in the past this “FOM” will be done as a contest. As soon as I post my fly, anyone who wants to enter can email me at: aroostookbasser@yahoo.com. Now providing we get the required 12 contestants we will have a contest!!!!
REMEMBER……..you must tye “my” fly. Then I will pick the winner from all the entries. The winner will get all of the flies that are submitted. As well as the fly I have tyed for this.
NOTE: If we fail to get the required number of contestants, this contest is cancelled. If you want your flies back please send along a self addressed stamped envelope. Failure to include this SASE will result in your flies being donated to either Reeling and Healing or Casting For a Cure. Feel free to enter more than one fly.
Watch for my next post………..Then the game begins!!! Oh yes…… this contest will run until January 1st 2010. I will post updates weekly and will post teaser pics of flies as they come in. Feel free to send me any spare flies you have kicking around you would like to donate to either fine charity. Email me for address!!!!!!!
