    If you think back to a few years ago when President Clinton was in office to the bill that banned “semi-automatic assault weapons.” During the office of our President Bush this bill has expired. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy has initiated bill HR 1022 again. This attempt will target those guns initially banned, plus she’s added more weapons to the list. The list looks like this:

    30) The term `semiautomatic assault weapon’ means any of the following:

    `(A) The following rifles or copies or duplicates thereof:

    `(i) AK, AKM, AKS, AK-47, AK-74, ARM, MAK90, Misr, NHM 90, NHM 91, SA 85, SA 93, VEPR;

    `(ii) AR-10;

    `(iii) AR-15, Bushmaster XM15, Armalite M15, or Olympic Arms PCR;

    `(iv) AR70;

    `(v) Calico Liberty;

    `(vi) Dragunov SVD Sniper Rifle or Dragunov SVU;

    `(vii) Fabrique National FN/FAL, FN/LAR, or FNC;

    `(viii) Hi-Point Carbine;

    `(ix) HK-91, HK-93, HK-94, or HK-PSG-1;

    `(x) Kel-Tec Sub Rifle;

    `(xi) M1 Carbine;

    `(xii) Saiga;

    `(xiii) SAR-8, SAR-4800;

    `(xiv) SKS with detachable magazine;

    `(xv) SLG 95;

    `(xvi) SLR 95 or 96;

    `(xvii) Steyr AUG;

    `(xviii) Sturm, Ruger Mini-14;

    `(xix) Tavor;

    `(xx) Thompson 1927, Thompson M1, or Thompson 1927 Commando; or

    `(xxi) Uzi, Galil and Uzi Sporter, Galil Sporter, or Galil Sniper Rifle (Galatz).

    `(B) The following pistols or copies or duplicates thereof:

    `(i) Calico M-110;

    `(ii) MAC-10, MAC-11, or MPA3;

    `(iii) Olympic Arms OA;

    `(iv) TEC-9, TEC-DC9, TEC-22 Scorpion, or AB-10; or

    `(v) Uzi.

    `(C) The following shotguns or copies or duplicates thereof:

    `(i) Armscor 30 BG;

    `(ii) SPAS 12 or LAW 12;

    `(iii) Striker 12; or

    `(iv) Streetsweeper.

    On top of those listed, she’s after more:

    (D) A semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine, and that has–

    `(i) a folding or telescoping stock;

    `(ii) a threaded barrel;

    `(iii) a pistol grip;

    `(iv) a forward grip; or

    `(v) a barrel shroud.

    `(E)(i) Except as provided in clause (ii), a semiautomatic rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

    `(ii) Clause (i) shall not apply to an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

    `(F) A semiautomatic pistol that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine, and has–

    `(i) a second pistol grip;

    `(ii) a threaded barrel;

    `(iii) a barrel shroud; or

    `(iv) the capacity to accept a detachable magazine at a location outside of the pistol grip.

    `(G) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

    `(H) A semiautomatic shotgun that has–

    `(i) a folding or telescoping stock;

    `(J) A frame or receiver that is identical to, or based substantially on the frame or receiver of, a firearm described in any of subparagraphs (A) through (I) or (L).

    `(K) A conversion kit.

    `(L) A semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General. In making the determination, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any Federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.’.

    (b) Related Definitions- Section 921(a) of such title is amended by adding at the end the following:

    `(36) Barrel Shroud- The term `barrel shroud’ means a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel of a firearm so that the shroud protects the user of the firearm from heat generated by the barrel, but does not include a slide that encloses the barrel, and does not include an extension of the stock along the bottom of the barrel which does not encircle or substantially encircle the barrel.

    `(37) Conversion Kit- The term `conversion kit’ means any part or combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting a firearm into a semiautomatic assault weapon, and any combination of parts from which a semiautomatic assault weapon can be assembled if the parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.

    `(38) Detachable Magazine- The term `detachable magazine’ means an ammunition feeding device that can readily be inserted into a firearm.

    `(39) Fixed Magazine- The term `fixed magazine’ means an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm.

    `(40) Folding or Telescoping Stock- The term `folding or telescoping stock’ means a stock that folds, telescopes, or otherwise operates to reduce the length, size, or any other dimension, or otherwise enhances the concealability, of a firearm.

    `(41) Forward Grip- The term `forward grip’ means a grip located forward of the trigger that functions as a pistol grip.

    `(42) Pistol Grip- The term `pistol grip’ means a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip.

    `(43) Threaded Barrel- The term `threaded barrel’ means a feature or characteristic that is designed in such a manner to allow for the attachment of a firearm as defined in section 5845(a) of the National Firearms Act (26 U.S.C. 5845(a)).’.

    So fellow sportsman it is clear to see that this is our time to stand up and let our government officials hear our voice. Granted you might not see your 22 long rifle, 20 gauge shotgun or your 30-30 lever action listed…..YET. This is a step in getting they’re feet in the door. Make no doubts about it……they’re big plan is to ban all sports that involve guns. I don’t know about yourself, I cannot just sit back and slowly let them take my rights of hunting and owning guns that I use for this great american tradition.

    Our buddy John over at Nutria News has a great article describing guns and guns rights of himself and his fellow americans. Go check out this article then get out and let your voice be heard. Contact those that represent you in the legislature and let them know your feelings on this issue. After all they are supposed to represent “us”. Right???

    Are you a member of the NRA? Take action….or loose your rights. It starts this way and soon PETA will have us all out of the wildlife recreation lifestyles and traditions we all know. If we allow one of these tragedies to occur…we are all part of the holocaust to follow!!!!!!

    This unique creation is well known in some circles and long forgotten in others. But in Maine this fly is still a standard tye in alot of boxes and catches alot of trout. Good luck with your quest…… the prize will be awarded to the first person with the correct answer. The earliest I will announce a winner will be on or about 3/31. So do some research…… and try to guess it… but get the name right to win. In the event no winner is selected by the 31st, I will leave this open until April 30th.

    Well I am truly disappointed.

    The second fly in the series was none other than the streamer, Grizzly King, a legendary fly. I never received a single guess on this one. But I am undaunted….. I am looking over several other flies more commonly known. I will post one in the next few days. You should know that the prize fits the challenge. The first fly, the Warden’s Worry, I believed to be very easy. The prize was a dozen of them custom tied by me. The second fly was harder and the prize was increased to two dozen assorted Maine trout flies. The next fly will be reasonably simple, but a challenge at the same time. The Contest on this one will last until it is solved. The prize…….. a brand new Scientific Angler’s Fly Fishing starter kit. (Includes rod/reel/ and the line/backing and leader.) Get out your pattern books and search the internet……… guess the fly and win the prize.

    The Maple Syrup; Alvin Theriault’s gift to trouters everywhere

    mp-edited-and-titled.JPG

    Well here is the “How To” of this pattern:

    1. Start by placing a size 10 aberdeen in the vise.and tie on the black 3/0 thread.
    2. Tie in some yellow calves tail fibers, keep it sparse.
    3. Tie in the Tan chenille (The bushier the better….don’t try this with that cheap thin stuff.) and advance the thread forward to near the eye.
    4. At your option you can add some lead wire at this stage….to make it sink deeper faster. Or you can leave it unweighted for slower water. If you add the lead… wrap the thread down and back to hold it there.
    5. Wrap the chenille forward,over the wire if you added it, and then tie it off.
    6. Now form a head and tie it off. Lacquer the head.

    This is a very fast and very effective fly to tie. Tie as many as you can and fish them often. You can alter the dressing abit to create variations…. but the tan chenille and yellow tail are about the best there is. I tie these in sizes from 6 to 10….. but the 10 is my favorite. You can change hook styles to your liking and not hurt the fly. This is just my adaptation of the fly.

    A Legendary Tyer

    As many of know we have a living legend here in Aroostook. Down Stacyville way there is the one and only Alvin Theriault. The next fly on my list to show you is his signature fly….The Maple Syrup. A truly great success story in a fly. In the accompanying article…. he states he ties over 3,000 per year. Add to that the number of others tied by all the other tyers of Brook Trout Flies…… and you are talking one of the top ten flies today! The link below will take you to the BDN article featuring AT and his ever growing fly empire…..enjoy.

    How to tie ….. the Devil Bug/Doodle Bug

    devilbug.jpg

    Here is the first fly I will teach you to tye:
    THE DEVIL BUG also known by some as the Doodle Bug.
    To start with:
    1. Choose a size to match your trout, the #6/#8 is my all around choice, but as the photo shows I have tied them as small as #12
    2. Tie on your thread, 3/0 preferred, red best or white if you have to.
    3. Wrap 1/3 of shank back from eye with fine lead wire.
    4. Wrap lead wire with thread and return thread to bend of hook
    5. Glue the windings with super glue.
    6. Tie in a short shank of red antron or poly blend yarn, knitters yarn is fine.
    7. Tie off yarn leaving a good 12 inch piece of thread hanging at bend of hook, trim away excess yarn.
    8. Retie thread at eye and wind back about 1/16 inch or less, leave room behind eye for later tie off.
    9. Wrap yarn up to thread and tie off.
    10. Take a short clump of white deer hair about an inch to 1 1/2 inches long. (be sure to stack it evenly) Then tie it in place first in the front. Be sure hair flairs but stays centered on top of shank. Glue thread/hair where it touches yarn. One drop each side.
    11. Now go back to bend of hook and using the 12 inch pece of thread, wrap the deer hair and tie it in place. Be sure it flairs as well as the front. (Glue it as you did the front.)
    12. Clip the deer hair “heads” evenly but not to short. This hair is what floats the bug, and looks buggier the bushier the heads are.

    This is truly one of the best all around wild brook trout “flies” I have ever used. They are fast and easy to tie… so make alot and share with friends. Try other colors…but red and white are the best. Never forget the effectiveness of the Dardevle spoon!!!

    This fly was originally tied by Orley Tuttle back in the 1930′s….. to which he held the patent for years. Now it’s our’s to tye and use….. Thank you Orley. Another great Maine tyer.

    Who is Aroostookbasser?

    brent-revised-02.JPG

    If you have found your way here you may be curious as to who I am. It is likely you have followed my link from some other portal on some other forum somewhere out there in cyberworld. So I shall do my best to explain who I am.
    My name is Brent Reece and like you I am an avid fisherman and fly tyer. Among my many interests, I am a founding member of the Houlton Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Southern Aroostook Bass Anglers, and MSBC Christian Sportsman. The latter organization is still up and running successfully under the heading of Ed Ellis, a good Christian brother. The TU chapter is just getting started. But the B.A.S.S. chapter failed to survive beyond it’s first year. (Not enough interest I’m afraid.)
    In addition to having a tendancy to start clubs like most people start their cars. I love to promote hunting and fishing anywhere I can. I can assure you that I don’t take my work in these organizations lightly. They are tools for reaching people about our common interests. If you enjoy hunting and fishing then go out share that love with others. That is how we protect our traditions.
    I am here to assist in educating my fellow flyfishers in all forms of tying and fly fishing. This Blog is “our” voice. Here we will exchange ideas and seek knowledge. All of us will learn more and be better for the experience. Like you I have fostered my intertests in many ways. This BLOG is just another way for me to share my love if fishing and flytying.
    I will from time to time post a fly and have you guess it. This fosters knowledge and challenges you to research your hobby more. In each case I will preselect a prize and award it to the first person who correctly identifies the fly.
    Just a little more background information may be in order. I started fishing at the age of 6 and have never really stopped. Back in 1978 the Clean Water Act changed my life. That Spring I caught the first recorded brown trout ever caught in the Meduxnekeag River. Do to the introduction of our new sewer system and the sewage treatment plant. That turned my river into a trout haven and not an open sewer as it had been for 100 years. That brownie changed me forever. Thanks to Mr. Sprague who lived on the river I also learned how to fly cast that spring. I have never loved anything more than fishing since.
    I could write an endless series of stories here and try to be like every other self obsorbed Blog on the wire… but I won’t. As I said this is “our” voice, not just mine.
    I would like to thank Steve Remington for this chance through Skinny Moose media to reach you. I hope you will take advantage of the site and share your knowledge with us all.

    How about a “One Fly”

    Looking out over this frozen wasteland and thinking about summer… I came up with the idea. Do you know a good charity? Would you fish? Would you volunteer?
