    FOM Part #3: Update

    brent-revised-02.JPG

Awesome!!!! Well so far we have 5 confirmed tyers for our contest. Hopefully we can get 5 times that by the deadline. No matter, email me that you are in and you can start tying. I will post the flies after Christmas or as they come in. But be aware….. I will not post the tyer’s name. Once we reach the minimum, I will update the pics with names.

Seems silly I know…….but if this contest folds I would not want to embaress those willing to attempt it. The internet is a strange place and all that is written is forever. You cannot erase anything in the ether of an electronic pulse. So come all you eager tyers and lets have a game of it.

FOM: ICE FLIES Part 2 …………The Neon Perch Special

    Neon Perch Special

    THE CONTEST FLY....Neon Perch Special

    The Tye:
    Hook: Size #8 3x Carlisle
    Thread: Orange Kevlar
Eyes: Bead Chain ( small silver)
    Body: Yellow Chenille (Lg size)
    Rib: Heavy Gold Wire
    Tail: White Marabou

Pretty basic tye. Place eyes on shank with kevlar thread and tye in tail. Add Chenille and wire. Wrap the chenille up to the eyes and tye off. Counter wind the wire to the eyes and tye down. Form the head with the thread and cement windings.

Now for the sake of imagination I will allow all tyers to alter the coloration of the tye. But the Neon must stay neon and all elements of the tye must remain. Feel free to play with colors but keep it “Neon”!!! Add some sparkle or flash ……..change the tail. But the basic elements must remain.

The Fly of The Month: Ice Flies Part One

Now watch this short video……and I will explain after.

Ice Fishing Flies — powered by ExpertVillage.com

First I will be posting my actual fly in the next 24 hours. But if you were watching the video closely you will see that all ice-flies are nymph-like bugs or minnowesque. The fly I will tye will be particularly suited for perch, as they are the #1 ice species catchable with these bits of sparkle and stuff.

As I stated in the past this “FOM” will be done as a contest. As soon as I post my fly, anyone who wants to enter can email me at: aroostookbasser@yahoo.com. Now providing we get the required 12 contestants we will have a contest!!!!

REMEMBER……..you must tye “my” fly. Then I will pick the winner from all the entries. The winner will get all of the flies that are submitted. As well as the fly I have tyed for this.

NOTE: If we fail to get the required number of contestants, this contest is cancelled. If you want your flies back please send along a self addressed stamped envelope. Failure to include this SASE will result in your flies being donated to either Reeling and Healing or Casting For a Cure. Feel free to enter more than one fly.

Watch for my next post………..Then the game begins!!! Oh yes…… this contest will run until January 1st 2010. I will post updates weekly and will post teaser pics of flies as they come in. Feel free to send me any spare flies you have kicking around you would like to donate to either fine charity. Email me for address!!!!!!!

    A word ……….with you.

In the past I have put forth a greater effort here at AFT than I have at my other blog…. Northwoods Wanderings. Fall is here and seasons change. I will do my best to keep things better balanced and informative. This blog and NWW are very important to me.

One of the things I will do is get back on track with the FLY OF THE MONTH. In fact I will make it a contest of sorts. I will post my tye of the fly with photos. Then you the readers can submit your tye of that fly. The winner receives all the flies sent in by all the tyers, and one of mine as well. I will post the entire group of flies I have received, at the same time announcing the winner. I get to select the winner!! The flies will be pictured as a group. But the winning fly will be singled out for a solo picture. In the event that I do not receive at least 12 flies……from all of you. The tyers will be notified by email, and their submissions will be donated to either “Casting for a Cure” or “Reeling and Healing”. (Please include a SASE if you want your fly back…..all others are going to charity.)

I cannot thank you all enough for coming here and reading these lines and entries. This blog has been a great outlet for me. As a tyer it has challenged me to tye better and smarter. As a writer it has challenged me to stay on task and to stay focused. As a Christian it has given me a way to reach out to you in my walk through this life. As a man it has challenged me to put my family first and myself second. This blog has seen me come and go like a spectre. As the troubles of life have drawn me from my time here. But here it has remained. The ebb and flow of popularity waining from time to time. BUT WE ARE STILL HERE!!!

I look forward to the coming days……. sharing my love of fishing and flytying here with you. In January 20010 I will have been here posting for 3 years. Although AFT has lost some of it’s pull among the blogs….it’s still here to serve the lovers of the fly and Aroostook!!!

    Finding the Time

In all my years as a tyer I have had a hard time finding the free time to tye during the summer. There is just so much to do all the time. I work for Walmart, myself as an independant contractor, and freelance writer. Not to mention being a dad and a husband. Lawns to mow and weeds to whack. Plus being available for church programs and CSF work as I can. The latter getting the least attention this year.

In the midst of this I have been talking to people about starting a chapter of Trout Unlimited. Then factor in guiding and exploring new fishing grounds to make that work. But at least when I am exploring I can wet a line and have a little fun.

This tough schedule has had a negative effect on my blog. I have had little time to write for all of you as well. For this I apologize. I will strive to do better in the future.

Flytying is an art and its fun. But never let it rule your life…then it’s an obcession. Devotion to your art and skills is a great thing. But allowing it to keep you from family and friends is “infantile”. Focus on the greater picture and you will see that the arts are essential to balance. Go too far in either direction and you will be leaning in a bad direction. Truth and happiness are good friends. Strive for both and you will know them well.

I challenge you, my readers, to share your stories with us. Tell me your tyes and your tricks. Send them to: aroostookbasser@yahoo.com

I will print your pics and tricks here and give you a chance to share with all who read these pages what you are doing on the bench. Then each month I will pick my favorite article from those I have passed on to you here. That writer will be entered into a drawing for a new rod and reel combo. A total of twelve possible writers could be in the contest if it ran all year. But we have 4 months left to this year……and 4 months until spring returns. That gives us 8 months maximum. The April 30th deadline will be the target. So write to me me via my email and send me your tying and fishing stories. The tyers will be entered into the drawing based on my preferences each month. But if you are the only submitter that month you are the guaranteed winner.

    Looking For Tyers

    fly-tying-zone.gif

    Are you a tyer?

I am looking for tyers to join me in a swap. The idea is very popular all over the internet and is simple in it's actions. I tye 12 flies of my choice and each of the remaining 11 tyers tye flies of their choice. All the flies are sent to me to be divided up and reshipped out to all of the participants.

The result of said swap is we all get 11 flies someone else tied. Plus we learn new patterns and meet new people. These swaps are a geat deal of fun and have added greatly to the variety of tyes in my boxes.

If you are a tyer and would like to participate…please email me at: aroostookflier@yahoo.com

The patterns will be done by topic …such as wet flies or dries and or species. But we will wait to see how many tyers we have before we worry about the what to tye part of this.
